1981 was a disappointing year for the Trans Am, as Pontiac's car couldn't recover from the decline that had started a year earlier.
The Trans Am sold over 117,000 units in 1979, but the next year brought a massive decline to only 50,000 cars. The drop got even more dramatic in 1981 when Pontiac produced only 33,000 Trans Ams.

One of the most notable news in 1981 was the introduction of the Daytona Pace Car Edition, but Pontiac also made changes in the engine lineup. The standard engine was the L37 301, previously offered as the W72, although this codename was dropped in 1981. The Trans Am could also be had with the LU8 301 Turbo and the LG4 305.

According to the VIN, this Trans Am rolled off the assembly lines with a Pontiac 301 four-barrel engine rated at 140 horsepower, but the owner wanted more power and made a fabulous choice. A rebuilt Pontiac 400 is now in charge of putting the wheels in motion. It's paired with a new 350 Turbo transmission.

eBay seller aiasto_4 says the engine runs and drives "beautifully," and they are undoubtedly correct. The Trans Am looks great as if it has always been properly cared for, but you should still see it in person before committing to a purchase. The floors and the quarter panels are still original, but there's something you should know about its striking look.

The owner says the paint is no longer the original one, as the car has been repainted – it looks like a professional job, but this is hard to judge based solely on images posted online. You should be able to decrypt more information with an in-person inspection, but considering the decals are also new, this Trans Am should look like it left the factory a few hours ago.

It's hard to find a reason to walk away if you like the 1981 Trans Am and don't mind the non-original goodies, but the selling price could be a major shortcoming in the car's attempt to find a new home. The owner posted it on eBay with a $30,000 starting bid, and considering it's a no-reserve auction, a single offer is all it takes for the Trans Am to find a new place to crash.

Meanwhile, the vehicle is parked in Cheshire, Massachusetts, and given its shape, it should be able to drive anywhere on its wheels. However, considering the auction will end in three days and nobody entered the race to take it home, the chances are that the Trans Am will fail to sell this time, so fingers crossed that someone discovers the car and agrees to pay at least the starting bid.
