Family adventures can be really fun. However, it's one thing to have a weekend getaway but another to make longer trips, like a cross-country one. If your family adventures lean more toward the second category, consider getting a tiny home on wheels. Today, I'm discussing a rig designed as the ultimate family van, ready to comfortably accommodate up to five people.
What we have here is a 2024 AWD Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a 170" wheelbase. Its creator is Beachside Custom Vans, an Atlantic Beach, Florida-based company specializing in custom camper van build meant to take more people on the road. I've covered one of its recent projects here on autoevolution.

The company appropriately named this rig the "Fam Van," as it's built for a family of five traveling around the United States. The vehicle was outfitted with numerous accessories inside and out, and it has some upgrades from the factory, including a comfort package, a driver convenience package, and an exterior LED light package.

As usual, I'll begin the van tour with the vehicle's exterior. First, I'm a big fan of the light blue/grey look. It's not paint but rather a custom wrap with ceramic coating. Beachside Custom Vans went even further and added a 3M wrap on the hood and the rocker panels that protect the paint from minor scratches.

The vehicle rides on 17-inch Black Rhino Arsenal Rims wrapped in 34-inch BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tires. While the Sprinter's AWD capabilities help the rig go off the beaten path, Beachside Custom Vans made sure the customer's family could adventure even deeper by installing an Agile Offroad Rip kit, which comes with upgraded leaf springs, front and rear shocks, and front coilovers.

At the front, you'll find a CAtuned bumper integrating lights, attachment points, and a Warn winch rated for 12,000 lb. (5,443 kg). Furthermore, on the driver's side of the vehicle, the builder fitted Agency 6 storage boxes and a Backwoods Adventure Mods side ladder.

Climb on the ladder, and you'll discover a Flatine Van Co. roof rack, to which Beachside Custom Vans attached a Thule storage box, a Fiamma F45s Eagle electric awning, and various lights.

The rear part of the van is also packed with accessories. You'll notice two Flarespace Invader racks holding a spare tire and an Owl Vans Monster box. Below, the company installed a step for easier accessibility and a connection for an ARB air compressor.

When you slide the entrance open, Amp Research steps deploy from under the vehicle, making stepping inside as easy as possible. Do that, and you'll be greeted by a spacious, cozy living space with an open layout, meaning the driver's cabin isn't separated from the rest of the interior.

Regarding aesthetics, this rig's customer opted for white oak plywood cabinetry paired with Lonseal luxury marine vinyl flooring and grey upholstered wall panels. A white ceiling integrating recessed LED light strips completes the look.

Dead ahead of the entrance, like in most camper vans, you'll find a three-seat bench with seatbelts, where your family can safely be seated when you're driving. Regarding storage, this front area of the vehicle has a headliner shelf and two overhead cabinets.

One of the cabinets holds the rig's control panel. It comprises a controller for an Espar heater and a Victron Cerbo GX touchscreen controller/monitor.

Next, we have a tiny kitchen located on the passenger side of the interior. It features a small white countertop that can be extended via a flip-up table, a deep sink with a UV-filtered water faucet, and a small Dometic fridge with a freezer compartment.

An additional control panel is mounted to the kitchen's white subway-tiled backsplash. It has three dimmer switches for the lights, switches for the water pump and the greywater tank's ball valve, and two outlets.

Since I talked about water, let me tell you the specifics of this van's plumbing system. Beachside Custom Vans removed the spare tire from underneath the vehicle and replaced it with a 28-gallon (106-liter) freshwater tank, which is connected to a water pump and a heater.

The water you use in the sink drains into a 5-gallon (19-liter) greywater tank in the cabinet underneath. It can be emptied at the press of a switch - just make sure to dump it in an appropriate area.

Despite its small size, the kitchen offers a decent amount of storage space in the form of a pull-out pantry, two overhead cabinets, and a cabinet underneath the sink.

Storage space is a typical issue in tiny homes on wheels. If you want to build a camper van for a family, you must ensure all members have enough room to store their belongings.

So, Beachside Custom Vans devised a massive storage area opposite the kitchen, where the bathroom is typically located. It consists of two large closets and three drawers, the larger of which houses a slide-out Laveo dry-flush toilet.

The rear part of the interior feels the most open. You'll notice a large lounge area with two long benches and two large tables in the middle – there's definitely enough room for five people to sit here.

But how about sleeping? As you'd expect, this lounge area can be transformed into a sleeping spot by using the tabletops to connect the two benches, and then rearranging the cushions.

However, this is not the main sleeping arrangement inside the van. The slatted ceiling you see above the lounge is, in fact, a queen-size bed mounted on a HappiJac lift, which can be adjusted to the height you prefer. You can also lower it to leave enough room for people to sleep underneath on the couch.

A Maxxair vent fan above the elevator bed keeps the air in the area fresh. However, for really hot days, you'll need to use a Marbu 12 V A/C.

The lounge's benches hide the camper's utility systems. The one on the passenger side holds the water pump and the Isotemp water heater. The cool thing about this latter feature is that it hooks up to the van's coolant loop, so water is heated while the engine is running, allowing you to save some power.

Inside the opposite bench, Beachside Custom Vans fitted the power system. Its highlights are two 200 Ah batteries, a 3,000 W inverter/charger, a DC-DC charger, and a MidCity Engineering Autostart, which lets you start the vehicle remotely. I'm surprised there are no solar panels on this rig, which are a must for off-grid adventures - perhaps the customer won't be adventuring that far from civilization.

Even though there's no garage inside this rig, opening the two rear doors reveals some extra notable features. These include an outdoor shower, an enormous slide-out drawer, and an outlet.

A bug screen is one feature I couldn't live without if I were to travel in a camper van. Sure, I love the open layouts that allow you to bring the outside in by opening the doors, but I don't want to let any insects inside my tiny home.

Luckily, Beachside Custom Vans took care of this issue by installing two massive zippable bug screens for both the rear doors and the sliding door. By the way, the bug screens were one of the seven camper van interior upgrades I feel make the most difference in van life comfort.

All in all, Beachside Custom Vans did a fantastic job with this rig. It's comfortable, well-equipped, and has a proper setup for off-road, off-grid family adventures. The company shared that this van is not for sale, but it will be building a similar one that will be listed for sale.

You're probably curious about how much something like this costs. As expected, it's not cheap. A fully custom conversion from this company generally costs about $75,000 (€70,044). Beachside Custom Vans works on most vans but specializes in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans.
