Vans are among the most popular vehicles to be converted into campers. However, today, I wanted to take a break from the usual camper van tours and check out a different kind of tiny home on wheels: one based on a snow plow truck.
Meet Ray, Trevor, and thieir mobile home, a retired 2008 GMC C7500 snowplow truck. This couple is no stranger to the mobile lifestyle. Back in early 2019, they completed their first camper project, which was based on an M1078 LMTV troop carrier. They liked it so much that they decided to convert this vehicle next - its purpose was to withstand the harsh Alaskan winters and off-road adventures.

As usual, I'll start the rig's tour with its exterior and mechanical specs. One of the major reasons why Ray and Trevor chose this specific vehicle is that its 4x4 conversion was 90% done when they purchased it. What's more, the rig sports a Caterpillar 3126, 7.2-liter diesel engine outputting 300 hp.

At the front, the duo installed a sizeable custom bumper and four powerful off-road lights up top with a total of 44,000 lumens. Moreover, a compartment on the driver's side of the rig houses propane canisters.

Other notable exterior features are a mini-split outdoor unit at the rear and two additional compartments on the passenger side, one of which holds the rig's power system. Its highlights are 600 Ah batteries, an inverter/charger, and a solar charge controller connected to 850 W solar panels on the roof. You'll find a backup generator, tools, and other stuff in the other compartment.

Most people make do with the space they have in a truck of this size. However, Ray and Trevor wanted more, so they got their hands on a sizeable trailer they tow wherever they go. It serves as a garage, holding Trevor's motorbike, tools, a chainsaw, fireworks, and much more. Moreover, in its front part, the couple attached their two bicycles.

To hop on inside this mobile home, you'll have to extend foldable stairs from under the door on the passenger side. You'll be greeted by a spacious and beautifully designed interior as soon as you enter. Furthermore, a wall separates the driver's cabin from the living space, but a door covered by a curtain allows you to pass through from one area to another.

On your right, you'll discover a wood stove, the rig's secondary heat source. The primary one is the mini-split, which also keeps the interior nice and cool when needed. The mini-split runs entirely off solar power – in fact, the powerful solar panels allow the couple to run the A/C round the clock.

Dead ahead, Ray and Trevor devised the kitchen, which is quite well-equipped. It features an oven/three-burner stove combo, a slide-out fridge/freezer, and a large spice rack. For storage, you can use various cabinets and drawers underneath the countertop, three sizeable overhead cabinets, and an enormous headliner shelf above the pass-through door.

Regarding aesthetics, I love the kitchen's dark green cabinetry. It's beautifully paired with the cedar wood flooring, which has epoxy resin inserts. The look is completed by a large splashback with white subway tiles and a mahogany countertop offering enough counter space.

In the middle space between the entrance and the kitchen, the couple mounted hooks to the ceiling, allowing them to attach a hammock chair.

Opposite the kitchen, you'll notice the seating area, which consists of a decently sized bench. The space underneath can be used for storage, just like the three overhead cabinets above.

Walk deeper inside this camper, and you'll reach the rear part of the interior. It's split into two areas: a bedroom, which takes up most of the room, and a bathroom.

The bedroom boasts a queen-size bed, a swivel-mounted TV, and a huge window letting plenty of light shine inside. Other notable features are a skylight, a mini-split, and three overhead shelves.

I love the bathroom Ray and Trevor created. It has an almost vintage look, with cedar wood all around. Of course, it's been treated to be waterproof. Besides having a striking aesthetic, the bathroom is also practical, featuring a shower and a Nature's Head composting toilet.

If you install water tanks outside the rig, you risk them freezing when traveling in cold environments. And since Ray and Trevor wanted their mobile home to be able to handle the harsh Alaskan cold, they added a freshwater tank in a large compartment underneath the bed.

All in all, this couple did a fantastic job with their tiny home on wheels. It has enough power and water, a cozy and well-equipped living space, and an enormous garage.

You're probably interested in knowing how much this all cost to build. I reached out to Ray and Trevor, and they explained that the base vehicle set them back $25,000 (€22,997), while the conversion cost $65,000 (€59,793). They could afford it by selling their first camper project, the LMTV conversion.
