There are different ways to get a camper van. Many people decide to convert a van themselves – this way, they significantly reduce costs but instead need to invest a lot of time and energy. If budget is not that big of an issue, you could consider a camper van conversion made by professionals, such as the one I'm checking out today.
Sure, you pay a lot extra for a specialized company to do the conversion, but the result is a tiny home on wheels that's typically better than a DIY-built one, especially if it's the work of beginners.

What we have here is a 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van with a 144" wheelbase. It was transformed into a mobile home by ActiVan, a Reno, Nevada-based company specializing in Sprinter and Ford Transit conversions.

First, an ActiVan customer must choose from the many floorplans available for the short and long-wheelbase versions of the two models I mentioned above. Then, the conversion is personalized according to the customer's requests.

The Sprinter van I'm checking out boasts a Truckee 144 floor plan with the extended passenger cabinet option. Before we take a look at the interior, I'd like to discuss the exterior features.

At the front, ActiVan covered the hood with LineX truck bed liner, which offers extra protection against pebbles, dirt, and minor scratches. The same goes for the two Vanspeed capsules, one on each side. They're a popular upgrade for Sprinter vans, designed to increase the interior's width at the rear.

On the passenger side of the vehicle, you'll find an FVC ladder that leads to an FVC Low Pro roof rack. The latter holds a light bar at the front, two 100 W solar panels, and a WeBoost antenna. Other notable roof features are a Nomadic Cooling A/C and a Maxxair fan.

There are no accessories at the rear like on other camper vans, but customers can opt for various upgrades, such as any Owl Vans exterior product.

Step inside this camper van, and you will be greeted by a bright and spacious interior. This rig's customers opted for white shiplap walls and ceiling paired with white cabinetry, while some black touches, like the handles and the A/C, complete the look.

You'll notice this van boasts an open layout, meaning the driver's cabin isn't separated from the living space. Usually, builders install walls between these two parts of the van for more privacy and security. It's rare to see them in vans with short wheelbases, as they would make the interior feel even smaller than it already is. Instead, ActiVan fitted a large curtain.

Starting from the front part of the van, the driver's cabin is equipped with swivel chairs for both the driver and passenger. Moreover, a swivel table mount is behind the driver's seat.

The middle part of the interior is taken up by the kitchen. I bet you didn't expect it to offer this much counter space, especially in a 144" wheelbase van. The kitchen is split into two equal parts, one on each side, both of which come with long butcher block countertops. In case they aren't enough, you can use a slip-up countertop extension on the passenger side, while the other countertop can be extended via the swivel table located behind the driver's seat.

Other notable features include a deep stainless steel sink with a cabinet underneath, a small Dometic fridge/freezer, an overhead microwave, a Maxxair ceiling fan, and an induction stove. For storage, you can use six sizeable drawers and a long overhead cabinet. The latter also integrates the rig's control panel, which consists of gauges for the water tank, an inverter controller, a battery monitor, a USB outlet, and switches for various appliances in this rig.

ActiVan fitted the side capsules I mentioned earlier to allow the customers to sleep from side to side on the queen-size bed by extending the width to a total of 80 inches (203 centimeters). What's more, both capsules come with slide-screen windows.

The bedroom space is quite straightforward. You'll notice two reading lights, two overhead cabinets, and the Nomadic Cooling A/C. Oh, I love that ActiVan installed bug screens for both the rear doors and the main door – there are few things I despise more than having mosquitoes buzz in my ears while trying to fall asleep.

Finally, we have the garage underneath the bed. Like in other camper van conversions, this is where you'll find the utility systems. The power system's on the right – its highlights are 300 Ah batteries, a 3,000 W inverter/charger, a DC-DC charger, and a charge controller connected to the solar panels on the roof.

The opposite side houses the water system, which is made up of a 20-gallon (76-liter) freshwater tank, a Seaflo water pump, a Bosch heater, and an outdoor shower. What's more, all the water you use drains in a 20-gallon greywater tank.

All in all, as always, ActiVan did a great job with this tiny home on wheels. One thing that's missing on this rig is a toilet, but you can add one if you want to - I guess this van's customers didn't mind not having one. You can find out more about this conversion and its upgrade options on ActiVan's website.

One detail you won't find information about is price. Based on the company's vans that are currently for sale, I estimate this rig is priced between $150,000 and $200,000 (€139,050 and €185,400).
