If you want to go on all-out expeditions, a camper van typically won't do the job. One great option for hardcore adventurers is a truck overlander like the one I'm checking out today. It combines proper off-road, off-grid capabilities with an efficient, feature-packed living space.
What we have here is an Iveco EuroCargo 15/240 truck transformed into a serious expedition rig. It was created by Southern Africa Roadtrippers, a caravan and motorhome rental company in South Africa that also builds luxurious and reliable habitat boxes for all sorts of campers.

We can learn more about the vehicle starting with its name. The "150" refers to the fact that it's a 15-ton gross-weight truck with "240" horsepower. Specifically, it sports a 6.0-liter diesel engine that powers all four wheels. What's more, it has center, front, and rear differential locks, as well as a two-speed transfer case.

The engine is fed by two exterior diesel tanks with a total capacity of 580 liters (153 gallons). According to SA Roadtrippers, the two tanks allow for a range of about 2,000 km (1,243 miles), varying depending on the road conditions and driving style. That's perfect for road trips in South Africa, where there are many remote places to explore.

Due to its dimensions, you won't miss this thing on the road. It measures 8.2 meters (26.9 feet) in length, 3.8 meters (12.5 feet) in height, and 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) in width.

When converting trucks like this one, you can't simply attach a camper box to it – if only it were that simple. If you did that, the structure couldn't withstand the stresses of going off-road. As a solution, most converters install torsion-free subframes engineered to protect your camper from torsional twisting of the truck frame. That's also what you'll find on this truck.

Most expedition rigs, including this one, come with many exterior accessories. Above the driver's cabin, the builders installed a custom aero kit to make it easier for the truck to deal with headwinds.

On the vehicle's passenger side, you'll discover a massive awning and two large aluminum storage boxes, perfect for storing tools, a grill, and whatever else you need on your adventures. Moreover, at the rear, you'll find a spare carrier holding two wheels, a winch-mounting point, and an under-run bar required by the law to minimize damages in case a vehicle crashes into the truck's rear.

On the driver's side, you'll notice the truck's exhaust, a compartment housing the truck batteries, a 380-liter (100-gallon) freshwater tank, two extra aluminum boxes, and a door that leads into an enormous pass-through garage inside the camper, where you'll find the rig's electrical system and two propane canisters.

When you have a vehicle that can go this deep off the grid, it's critical to have enough power for all your needs. This electrical system provides enough juice for your adventures. Its highlights are four 200 Ah lithium batteries, a 3,000 W inverter/charger, DC-DC chargers, and charge controllers for solar power.

Finally, the roof holds 1,580 W solar panels scrub bars to prevent branches from scratching it.

You'll step inside the vehicle using electric stairs. An open, spacious interior with a minimalistic aesthetic will greet you. Specifically, SA Roadtrippers opted for matte grey and pale cabinetry for the lower and upper parts of the interior, respectively.

The look is completed by beautiful leather upholstery for the couch and teak flooring reminiscent of a yacht. Furthermore, I love that the living space is well-lit, as there are multiple windows on both sides of the camper. They all come with bug screens and black-out shades.

I'll start the interior tour from the front of the rig. A pass-through connects the driver's cabin to the camper box. The first amenity in the box is the bathroom, which is split into two parts. You get an enclosed space with a shower and a separate area with a sink, a cabinet, and a toilet.

Walk deeper inside the rig, and you'll be in between two massive fridges and a floor-to-ceiling storage unit comprising a hanging closet and a large cabinet.

Next, we have the kitchen, located on the passenger side of the interior. It boasts a built-in three-burner stove, a small oven/microwave, and a tiny stainless steel sink with a cover. Moreover, there are plenty of storage options in the form of soft-close drawers and numerous overhead cabinets.

Opposite the kitchen, SA Roadtrippers devised a coffee station with a slide-out coffee maker, a shelf that serves as a charging station since it has multiple outlets and some additional drawers. There's never enough storage space in a tiny home on wheels, so any extra spots will surely come in handy.

The following part inside this camper is a dinette area. It comprises a U-shaped couch with a large table in the middle that can be electronically lowered and raised. Inside the benches, the builders installed a freezer and the rig's plumbing system with a freshwater tank.

Like in most other expedition trucks, the bedroom occupies the rear. There's plenty of sleeping space on this bed, which is 2.4 meters (94 inches) long and 1.6 meters (63 inches). You'll notice overhead cabinets on both sides of the bed for extra storage, while two reading lights will provide some ambient lighting. Another notable feature is a control panel integrated into one of the bedroom walls. It has light switches for the many lights inside the camper and a Victron touchscreen monitor and controller.

All in all, this mobile home will keep you comfortable regardless of how deep off the grid you go. I would've loved to know and tell you the price of this rig, but SA Roadtrippers didn't share any info about that. If I were to take a wild guess, I'd say it's around $300,000 (€280,125) - don't quote me on that, though.

It's a pricey build for sure, but after all, there are few places where this beast won't be able to take you. And, generally speaking, if you want high-quality builds like this one from SA Roadtrippers, you'll need to prepare your wallet.
