A 23-year-old woman from China’s Henan province, Xinmi City, wanted to propose to her boyfriend of 3 years in a very special way, while also helping him overcome his fear of heights.
So she thought of the glass bridge that opened earlier this year, the Fuxi Mountain Skywalk, which stands 350 meters (1,150ft) above a canyon. The sight alone is breathtaking, but for someone who’s afraid of heights it’s twice so in the most literal sense.
You see, Xiao Jing’s boyfriend is one of those people. She thought that was a weakness in him and she couldn’t imagine marrying a man who couldn’t face this fear for her. She got dolled up in a wedding gown and, to further sweeten the deal, bought a brand new SUV that she put on display on the glass bridge.
On the hood of the car she placed a suitcase full of money – her dowry in case she ended up marrying the guy. Once the BF arrived on the scene, she made him an offer she thought he couldn’t resist: walk a few feet on the glass bridge and all that (herself, the car and the money) would be his.
“Though I’m happy to have been in love with you for three years and my parents are pushing us to get married, I can’t marry you,” she told him, as cited by the South China Morning Post. “You wonder why? You have a weakness that I can’t bear at all – cowardice and a fear of heights! Everything is ready, all you have to do is to walk across this bridge and I will marry you.”
The offer seems simple enough, you might say. Any guy would have jumped at the chance, you could even add. Well, not this guy.
As you can see in the video at the bottom of the page, shot on the occasion, there was nothing he saw that tempted him to face his fear and walk on that glass bridge. In the end, Jing was left with the car and the money – and no boyfriend, because she decided to break up with him when he wouldn’t face and overcome his fear for her.
As for speculation that this is a PR stunt, staff at the bridge say they get offers to stage proposals all the time. They’re in the business of making them reality, not of staging PR stunts, they add in a statement to the same media outlet.
