The ID.4 has been hit with a safety recall comprising 79,953 vehicles produced for the US market. A software-based issue may result in the infotainment system and instrument panel not booting up or sporadically resetting. The loss of rearview camera image and speedometer information goes against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111 for rear visibility and number 101 for controls and displays.
Affected vehicles were produced in Germany and the United States for the 2021 through 2023 model years. According to Volkswagen Group of America, the VIN range begins with WVGDMPE25MP000464 and ends with 1V2JNPE80PC049686. The automaker claims that less than one percent of the 79,953 recalled crossovers actually feature iffy software.

Prior to filing the recall documentation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company was aware of 354 warranty claims from April 2023 through February 2024. Thankfully for Volkswagen Group of America's legal department, no crashes or injuries related to this concern have been reported thus far.

The Volkswagen Group's Product Safety Committee started looking into this problem back in May 2023. As you might have guessed by now, an update will fix the recall condition. Updated software was introduced in production during calendar week 24 of last year (June 2023).

Be that as it may, recall documentation reveals that affected vehicles were produced in the period between March 6, 2020 and November 2, 2023. But alas, it's not clear why vehicles assembled after June 2023 may have been produced with the buggy software. Dealers have already been instructed to update the software, whereas owner notification letters will be mailed on or about July 12.

In the meantime, owners can take matters into their own hands by entering the 17-character VIN on the automaker's recall portal. Alternatively, owners may contact VW customer service, their preferred retailer, or the NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline for more information on recall 919A/24V-344.

The ID.4 moved precisely 37,789 units in the United States last year, which represents an improvement of 84.2 percent over the 2022 sales volume. During the first quarter of 2024, Volkswagen Group of America reported a 37- percent drop (from 9,758 to 6,167 deliveries).

When it comes to rivals, the ID.4 competes against the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the mechanically similar Kia EV6, the Toyota bZ4X, the Subaru Solterra, and – of course – Ford's Mustang Mach-E. At $39,735 before taxes and options, the ID.4 is more affordable than said competitors. In terms of pricing, the Mustang Mach-E is closest to the ID.4, for the Select RWD trim level starts at $39,995.

The most driving range you can expect from the ID.4 is 291 miles (468 kilometers) in the EPA's test cycle. At the bottom end of the spectrum, the estimate is a meager 206 miles (332 kilometers).
