Introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year, the XC40 has been upgraded in the United Kingdom. Priced at £28,965 on the road, the smallest crossover in the Volvo lineup is now available in T4 flavor with front-wheel drive.
T4 is Volvo’s way of saying 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder and 8.4 seconds to 62 miles per hour. It’s 0.1 seconds quicker than the all-wheel-drive version and £1,400 less expensive to boot. Moving on to the T3, the three-cylinder turbo now features 163 horsepower as opposed to 156. An eight-speed automatic transmission is also available, joining the six-speed manual that comes standard.
While the M76 stick shift is capable of hitting 62 miles per hour in 9.3 seconds, the AW TG-81SC can’t do better than 9.6 seconds because it’s set up for smooth shifts. The T3 manual also happens to be more efficient, claiming a fuel economy of between 37.2 and 41.5 miles to the gallon.
But wait, there’s more! Inspired from the R-Design trim level, all XC40s with the automatic transmission now feature paddle shifters as standard. Equipment changes further include a load protection net, locking glovebox, 12-volt power outlet in the trunk, and auto-folding mirrors. In terms of optional extras, the Winter Plus package adds a heated steering wheel and rear seats.
"The XC40 has been a huge success since it arrived in UK showrooms early last year, and these new powertrains will only enhance its appeal to customers who want a desirable and distinctive premium compact SUV,” said Kristian Elvefors, managing director of Volvo in the United Kingdom.
Also new for the 2020 model year are three exterior finishes, namely Pebble Gray, Glacier Silver, and Thunder Gray. The lineup will welcome the T5 Twin Engine in early 2020, which is a plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of 50 kilometers or thereabouts.
The XC40 EV will follow towards the end of the year, and sales are expected to start in early 2020 pretty much everywhere Volvo has a dealership.
