Having just announced their latest i-ART technology designed to cut fuel consumption in the new diesel engines, Volvo plans to develop new four-cylinder powerplants that will leave the V8s “unemployed”.
The Swedish automaker claims its new units will outperform the current six-cylinder engines and will offer better fuel efficiency than today’s four-cylinder plants. Moreover, when combined with electric motors power figures will be able to tackle those found in V8 “generators”.
"We will create smaller, more intelligent engines with so much power that they will turn V8s into dinosaurs. Our four-cylinder engines will offer higher performance than today's six-cylinder units and lower fuel consumption than the current four-cylinder generation. On top of that, electrification will bring us up into power figures in today's V8-territory," said Derek Crabb, Volvo’s Vice President of Powertrain Engineering.
While this sounds more than promising, we’re still a long way from getting to see it with our own eyes, as these wonder four-cylinder engine could make their entrance in 2014, along with the next-generation Volvo XC90. Among other powerplants, the SUV which is also powered by a future dinosaur V8 unit.
