One of the most active car manufacturers when it comes to their involvement in niche sports like golf and yachting, Volvo is getting ready to kick off the 17th edition of the Volvo China Open, the oldest in the country.
The car maker announced today that this year the open would take place between April 21 and 24 (a prime-time date on the European Tour and OneAsia schedules), at a new location, the Luxehills International Country Club in Chengdu.
Also new for this year is the amount of money up for grabs for the players. For 2011, Volvo plans to offer $3 million in cash to all the players, with half of million dollars going to the winner of the open.
"These are three major building blocks in the next stage of our vision for the Volvo China Open and takes the national open golf championship of China, golf's fastest-growing market onto a new level of prestige and significance in the world of golf," said Per Ericsson, Volvo Event Management - Golf president.
The most exciting thing about the new open (no, we are not talking about the money) is the location. The 7,335-yards and Par-72 course has been acknowledged two years ago as one of China's top ten golf courses during the China Golf Course Awards.
"Luxehills is one of the best golf facilities in the country and we know that everyone who attends, players, sponsors and members of the media will be afforded a very warm welcome," added CB Fong, Luxehills general manager.
