Volkswagen's boxy four-seater Up! has been revealed in all-electric form ahead of the vehicle's debut at the 2013 Annual Press and Investors Conference.
The e-Up!, which is the German automaker's first all-electric car, is reportedly writing a new chapter in mobility with "nearly zero noise" and an "impressive driving range" of 150 kilometers (93 miles).
Volkswagen's small city car is powered by an electric motor with a peak power of 82 HP, while continuous power is rated at 55 HP and maximum torque at 155 lb-ft. The e-Up! is no nippy car with a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 14 seconds and a top speed of 84 mph (135 km/h), but it's not like anyone would want to take record lap times with it at Nurburgring.
To be able to run up to 150 km, the 1,185 kg vehicle uses a 18.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged to 80 percent of its maximum capacity in just 30 minutes.
The electric version of the Up! can be distinguished on the outside by its curved layout of the LED running light in the front bumper, updated sills and new 15-inch machine-polished alloy wheels. In the cabin, the little VW will come with special leather and chrome accents "to convey a puristic impression that matches the vehicle concept of a full-fledged urban electric car".
The e-Up! will be officially introduced at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show this autumn, with deliveries to commence soon after.
