The GTI study of the recently launched drop-top model could serve more as a marketing tool to bring all eyes on the “strawberry basket” while it tours Europe for promotional purposes... at least that’s what we think.
You see, the convertible model could very well have the 2.0-liter TSI engine under the bonnet, but VW is unlikely to call it a GTI, because this would compromise the performance brand in the eyes of its fans, and they didn’t do it with the EOS despite implanting the same engine. You just can’t have a flower-power attitude and eat petrol for breakfast at the same time.
However, the concept looks so amazing that we just can’t help but want to see it go into production. The cosmetic upgrades include a bespoke aero kit a new front bumper, a GTI grille with red accents, a rear diffuser with a honeycomb grille and unique exhaust tail pipes on either side. A continuous line is formed with the front spoiler, extended wheel arches and side sills, all finished in a piano black hue.
The Golf GTI Cabriolet sits close to the ground on huge five-spoke wheels that remind us of those on the Audi RS3.
The concept was shown today at the largest annual GTI Meet in the world at lake Worthersee in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia, where the 270 hp Golf R Cabriolet design study was also unveiled.
