Volkswagen was keen last month that not just Mercedes can build a cool compact four-door coupe. And so, they unveiled the NMC concept at the Beijing Auto Show. The thing about selling cars in China is that you have to be very careful that your designs don’t get copied by protecting them with patent filings.
Et voila, we have patent images of the NMC Concept, leaked way before VW is actually ready to put the car into production. This comes just a week after the New Midsize Coupe was spotted in production form, so we can now give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.
First of all, it might not be called the NMC. That name was given to it because it’s as wide as a midsize (Passat). But the fact that it’s shorter in length than a Jetta will create confusion. Instead, a play on the CC name or the resurrection of an iconic name, like they did with the Scirocco, is preferable.
With a short greenhouse and restricted headroom in the back, this car is a lifestyle choice, not a logical one. There shouldn’t be any entry-level models with 1.2-liter engines and unpainted door handles here!
Xenons, LED taillights and other goodies are probably going to be standard. The car in the patent images also has the same infotainment system as the Golf 7 and the advanced lane keeping radar installed in the lower bumper.
Even by Volkswagen standards, this is a pretty unsparing car. Maybe it’s a little better than a Jetta because it’s wider, but Nissan has headlights like boomerangs and this has… squares. Maybe a good coat of red paint and some large alloys will fix that.
For now, all rumors suggest this car is based on a Jetta, not the MQB, and will stay in China. But you never know, if enough people ask for it, maybe VW can bring it to Europe as well.
