Volkswagen is planning to wow the crowd with its hottest models at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Four different kinds of machines will be showcased on the weekend of 26-28 of June, all of them touching UK soil for the first time.
For many, the most exciting of them will be the Golf R400, a concept car that was shown at 2014's Shanghai Auto Show and will soon make it into full-scale production. As its name suggests, this is a Golf R with a 400 horsepower engine, which means it will be a more powerful machine than the A45 AMG.
Another exciting car coming this year to Goodwood is the XL Sport. The blue coupe from Wolfsburg is derived from the XL1 1-liter car but uses a motorcycle engine taken from Ducati in place of the 0.8 TDI. This two-cylinder V2 produces 200 PS and gives the XL Sport a top speed of 168 mph.
Thirdly, we have the Polo R WRC, which is of course not a concept, but a very real car that has seen action across the globe in the World Rally Championship. This model won the WRC last year and is currently leading the manufacturer and driver championships. We'd say it kicks butt in a major way and should be one of the fastest cars on the hill climb track.
Finally, we have the Sport Coupe GTE Concept, which made its debut only recently at the Geneva Motor Show and could serve as a preview for the next CC four-door coupe. Instead of a conventional powertrain, it utilizes a plug-in hybrid drive, combining a TSI petrol engine with two electric motors.
We're most excited to see the XL Sport because it's made from super-lightweight materials and looks like no other Volkswagen ever made. However, if the Golf R400 does a hot lap, it should be a very interesting one.
