Domagoj Dukec, the head of BMW Design, has shared this snippet of information - with pride in his words. Well, someone should tell him a word or two about not going to those ritzy parties without protection against spiked drinks that cause trippy ideas.
Was I too ironic? Well, at least a part of the BMW fan community probably thinks that all the Bavarian automaker's designers are on something when they design models like the Minecraft-like M2, the bucktooth castor-like 4 Series, M3, and M4, or the hilariously odd BMW 7 Series, i7, and X7 LCI. Of course, the cherry on top has to be the flagship BMW XM plug-in hybrid crossover SUV.

Anyway, it seems that BMW also knows a thing or two about fetishes – and an older one has been resurrected just in time for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, all thanks to the aforementioned BMW XM getting draped in velvet and labeled as the one-of-a-kind BMW XM Mystique Allure. No, the field of lavender doesn't help make it more palatable, at least if you ask our two cents on the matter.

Of course, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and we encourage different opinions – we are not going to hold a grudge against anyone who thinks this is the cutest thing ever and goes perfectly with their purple passion for everything and everyone. Unfortunately, there isn't much information about this bespoke BMW XM Mystique Allure aside from "high fashion meets high performance" and that we can visit Cannes and the local BMW pop-up store to see it if we are around town during the legendary Film Festival.

As far as we can see, it's partially covered in actual velvet - we hope it doesn't rain on the French Riviera these days – the 77th edition of the annual iconic festival takes place between May 14 and 25. By the way, American filmmaker and actress Greta Gerwig will serve as jury president for the main competition, and one of the most anticipated movies of the year – George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" – is on the red carpet. Just so you know, there are many alternatives to BMW's odd purple XM.

Back to the Mystique Allure vehicle, it also has something that I hoped I would never see again once my kids grew out of the T-shirt with reversible sequins fashion. Unfortunately, this BMW XM not only uses velvet both inside and outside, but it also probably features thousands of sequins all over the body and in the cockpit. Oh, and if you were wondering when BMW used fabric on a car's body, the 2008 BMW Gina Light Visionary Model is the answer – but it was much better-looking thanks to its simpler retro-like design and the fact that this roofless two-seater sports car (also born during a polarizing era – the Bangle age) had a flexible fabric surface.
