Vauxhall has announced a new trim level to its rage today, the Vauxhall Astra ES Tech. The model offers good value for money and is aimed at competitors from Ford and Volkswagen. Powering the five-door hatchback is a 1.4-liter turbo engine, with power levels reaching 140 horsepower.
The model also comes as standard with CD500 Satnav system (including CD player, MP3, USB, iPod control, seven speakers and aux-in socket), Bluetooth, a DAB radio, 17-inch alloy wheels and aircon. All that is added to the already well-equipped Astra, that comes with curtain airbags, ESP, daytime running lights, cruise control and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
According to a press release made by Vauxhall, the Astra is £800 less expensive than one of its main competitors, the VW Golf 1.4 TSI, that has 18 less horsepower and doesn’t offer Satnav as standard. The Astra’s performance figures (a 0-60 mph time of 9.0 seconds and top speed of 126 mph or 202 km/h) are also higher than the Golf’s.
Vauxhall fans who would like a diesel-powered Astra will be glad to know that the ES Tech is available with the 125 hp 1.7 CDTi engine, which offers sub 120 g/km CO2 emissions.
“We know that the competition is fierce in the compact class, so the Astra needs to deliver. The new ES Tech models now raise the bar for value and equipment levels in the class and should make buyers think twice before putting their hard-earned cash down on a Ford or VW,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director.
