I can hardly contain my excitement, but it’s official - TVR is no longer in limbo. The iconic British manufacturer is alive and kicking, currently preparing for a grand reentry on the sports car market. McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray and Cosworth struck a deal with TVR to develop an all-new sports car animated by a Cosworth engine.
TVR chairman Les Edgar takes it from here: “We know that a new TVR has to be better than just good – it has to be outstanding. From the outset, we only wanted to work with the best partners in the business, and both Gordon Murray’s and Cosworth’s track records within motor sport and high-performance car design and engineering speaks for themselves. Gordon Murray Design and Cosworth are the perfect partners for TVR and together, we will deliver a truly exceptional new car.”
TVR’s long-awaited return to market with a new model is not just a bleak promise. The British outfit put together a new management team and, get this, the all-new car “is already well advanced with over a year of development completed so far.” Gordon Murray and Cosworth alike provided the fundamental design and engineering for the yet-to-be-detailed TVR model. Later this year, TVR will publish more details and early images of the machine.
According to the manufacturer, the all-new TVR model will give classically correct British two-seat sports car a “composite ground effect aero chassis and body package using Gordon Murray Design’s innovative iStream technology.” Furthermore, the vehicle will get a traditional front-engined/rear-wheel drive layout and a 6-speed manual transmission. Engine? All we heard is that it will be a normally aspirated V8 motor with dry-sump lubrication, developed and engineered by Cosworth.
Production will begin in 2017 and the pricing is described as being competitive for this segment. Gordon Murray adds more fuel to the blazing fire surrounding this vehicle: “TVR is an iconic brand which has been an important part of British sports car manufacturing for many decades. Its return to manufacturing is an exciting development and the car deserves the best chassis and powertrain that can possibly be delivered. To that end, I am delighted that our company is involved with the project, and that TVR are using our iStream technology.”
Bruce Wood, Cosworth Technical Director, notes: “We are proud to see Cosworth’s industry-leading engineering at the heart of the revived TVR brand. Our team has been working closely with TVR and Gordon Murray Design to develop a powertrain solution that perfectly complements the exceptional performance characteristics of the new car. It’s an exciting project and one which well suits Cosworth’s engineering expertise.”
Dear TVR, welcome back and here's to your future model!
