One truck driver passing through Bolton, Greater Manchester, UK, found out the hard way why it’s never a good idea not to properly secure the cargo you’re carrying.
Video of the incident is available at the bottom of the page. It was retrieved and made public by SWD Media, a road safety website, and it’s now making the rounds online and in the British media, as a warning to all other careless truck drivers.
It was filmed by the driver of a car behind the truck, whom you hear screaming to get the man’s attention. “Your door’s open!” he says over and over again, until the driver, identified as David Simmons, finally pulls over and comes out to see what the fuss is all about.
He realizes the other driver is right and he comes near the merchandise, presumably to put it back in place. One trolley packed with beverages and food items comes crashing down on him, hitting him smack in the head.
Needless to say, none of this would have happened had he properly retrained the goods and closed the door. On the other hand, it’s a wonder items weren’t spilled all over the road, putting other people’s life at risk. As it is, the man can – and will survive – with a bump on the head.
“This is a serious incident that could have been prevented had the vehicle been loaded correctly. Loads must be secured by a physical restraint and with the rear shutter fully open,” a spokesperson for SWD Media says in a statement to Metro.
“It’s extremely lucky items weren’t strewn all over the road whilst the truck was moving. I hope the driver makes a speedy recovery and I urge the company involved to investigate this incident and review their procedures as a matter of urgency,” the statement continues.
