Truck camping is considered by many the most exciting and liberating way to explore the world for several reasons, but the enhanced mobility it allows for is its greatest appeal. Truck campers are way more flexible than other traditional RVs and offer easier access to off-road destinations, giving you the freedom to go just about anywhere.
Camping enthusiasts seeking versatile and cost-effective ways to travel the world will be thrilled to find out there is a new overlanding-ready motorhome available - the TrekTwo, a compact and agile camper built on the popular Toyota Tacoma mid-size pickup truck. Unveiled at the Overland Expo West 2024 that took place last month in Arizona, the TrekTwo aims to redefine the expedition vehicle landscape. In a sea of all-terrain campers focused on size and power, the newcomer stands out with a balanced mix of compactness, mobility, and robustness.

Built by World Travel Vehicles, a new player in the camper manufacturing world based in Durango, Colorado, this truck camper is designed for folks who want to pursue overland exploration in rugged terrain without compromising on the comforts and functionality of their mobile living space.

Based on the Toyota Tacoma, one of the best off-roaders in the compact pickup truck class, adventurers can rest assured they'll get exceptional off-road capability. They can count on a powerful engine, robust suspension, great ground clearance, and advanced traction control, all of which will allow them to roam freely and navigate difficult terrains without ease.

Though it may not have the mega-spacious interior of a large RV or travel trailer, the TrekTwo is a premium camper and offers an efficient way to bring the comforts of home on your outdoor adventures. The living quarters are meticulously crafted to offer comfort and style regardless of whether you embark on long-term adventures or short leisure trips.

In terms of construction, the motorhome box is made of a sandwich composite material with a wall thickness of 38 mm (1.5 inches), FRP planking with PU core, and hard PU reinforcements, and is mounted to the naked bed of the Tacoma midsize truck. It also boasts six scratch-proof windows and a big skylight with blinds and fly screens. A roof railing with spotlights and branch protection, two electrical steps, and a full-width storage compartment complete the exterior design.

As nifty and rugged as the exterior might look, it's the interior that really sets the TrekTwo apart. Designed as a full-fledged home away from home, the living space is comfortable, practical, and stylish. The layout makes efficient use of the available space and cleverly integrates a functional kitchenette, a step-up dinette, a cabover sleeping space, a wet bathroom, and plenty of storage.

A standout feature of the design is a trapdoor/emergency exit that allows quick access from the living quarters to the driver's cab and vice-versa. The flip-up hatch is located below a removable cushion on the alcove-style bed and comes quite in handy if you encounter emergency situations in the wilderness and need to quickly get behind the wheel and drive away.

The 79.5 x 53-in (202 x 135 cm) alcove bed features a Froli spring system for enhanced comfort and can easily sleep three people. A pair of wooden shelves above the bed add some storage space for books, phones, water bottles, and other necessities.

Just beneath the bed, there is a two-person dinette with storage-integrated benches and a flip-up table. It offers a cozy spot for dining or lounging on days with dreary weather when you are forced to spend more time inside. The dinette can convert into a single bed as an optional upgrade.

The kitchen can be found just inside the rear passenger-side door. Despite its compactness, it offers enough space to store cooking essentials and food and is equipped with a sink and a dual-burner gas stove with a countertop-style hinged lid that can be used as extra workspace. There is also an 80-L compressor refrigerator incorporated at eye level in a cabinet on the opposite wall.

A wet bathroom is also part of the interior and comes complete with a composting toilet, a shower, and a sink that slides out from behind the bathroom wall. When not in use, the sink disappears into the wall and offers full shower access.

In order to ensure self-sufficiency in remote locations, WTV equipped the overland micro-camper with an advanced electrical package that comprises 450W worth of solar panels, a 400-Ah lithium battery paired with a 3,500W inverter/mains charger, and two Victron charge boosters connected to the truck's alternator. For those who want to tread even more lightly during their travels, options include an induction cooktop and a larger 600-Ah battery to eliminate the need to use propane tanks.

The TrekTwo may be more compact than traditional expedition trucks, but it compensates for that with its nimble design and easy maneuverability even on narrow or rough trails, ensuring adventurers can reach farther unexplored destinations.

A team of experienced German engineers and carpenters will join forces with US-based truck specialists to build this exceptional truck camper. Components for the new TrekTwo will be built by Burrow RV, a German company with over a decade of experience in the off-road camper manufacturing world, with final assembly and customization set to be carried out in Colorado by World Travel Vehicles on client-supplied trucks.

Since this is a customizable camper, pricing will vary depending on the materials and features chosen. The TrekTwo pickup truck camper World Travel Vehicles showcased at the Overland Expo last month cost a whopping US$295,000.

For folks who prefer bigger truck campers, the company has two additional models in the pipeline - the TrekFour and TrekFourL based on the one-ton Ford F-350 pickup truck.
