Volkswagen has produced a tougher version of the Transporter van. Called the Transporter Rockton, it has all the right credentials to be called a rugged off-roader. The vehicle is based on the recently facelifted Kombi van and comes equipped with a Haldex permanent four-wheel drive.
Its 4MOTION 4x4 platform comes with a differential lock on the rear axle as standard. To further improve the van’s off-road skills, Volkswagen has fitted it with reinforced suspension and damping. The ride height has also been increased by 30 millimeters (a little over an inch) in order to better clear road debris.
Volkswagen also offers buyers two more equipment levels with extra features in the form of the Expedition and Protective packages. 16 inch reinforced steel rims wrapped in all-terrain tires have been added to the Expedition package. The van also has a different transmission which the company claims " provides greater pulling power in off-road operation", plus individually sliding and removable seats trimmed in a special fabric inside.
Those wanting true off-road credentials for their Rockton van should consider specifying the Protection Package, which includes protection plates for the engine and transmission, fuel tank, side sills, rear axle and exhaust system. On all versions a multi-function container with a desk and a mesh partition for the passenger space is also available.
Powering the Rockton 4MOTION will be Volkswagen’s trademark 2.0-liter diesel engine offered with two output levels, 140 hp or 180 hp. The off-roading van cost €34,545 ($45,690) not including VAT for the standard version, or €42,490 ($56,190) when ordered with the Expedition package. The van is available in three colors: yellow, red, gray and black.
