There are still a lot of customers in Europe that are not convinced about the performance of hybrid powertrains. For them, Toyota will fit BMW-sourced engines in more models.
So far, the new Toyota Verso is the one to benefit from the new 1.6-liter D-4D engine developed with BMW that will replace the 2-liter unit, thus reducing CO2 emissions an responsiveness.
Vice president for European R&D Gerald Killman told AutoExpress that the deal has been extended for several other platforms, including the Auris (both hatch and estate) as well as the RAV4. This means that a bigger 2-liter diesel engine can also be on schedule.
The new 1.6-liter D-4D engine makes 110 bhp (which is 14 less than the 2-liter old version) but its 20 kg lighter and comes with redesigned dual-mass flywheel, mounts and electronic components. This results in an average fuel consumption of 62.8 mpg UK and 119 g/km CO2 emissions.
