Despite the fact that Toyota constructed a separated FT-86 Open concept just for the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru said that such a vehicle won’t enter production.
Subaru brand chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga denied a production version BRZ cabrio, saying that the vehicle would require massive modifications to meet safety standards, so neither the Toyota’s 86 Open won’t reach the assembly line.
"We make the car, so if we don't make it, it can't happen," Yoshinaga said at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. "Our engineering department told me that losing the entire roof requires a complete redesign of the structure. It would need a big change."
The Subaru plant in Gumma, Japan, makes both the BRZ and the FR-S which is the American GT 86, so the extensive modifications needed for the open top sportscar are not feasible for the company, meaning that the budget sporty convertible will remain just a dream.
