Toyota Surfrider Camry Hybrid, Presented at SEMA

As you already seen by now, Japanese carmaker Toyota is set to storm the SEMA floor with a big number of custom made vehicles. The latest news coming from Las Vegas is the Toyota Surfrider Camry Hybrid, a CNG (compressed natural gas) version of Toyota's Camry, built together with Surfrider Foundation and Metal Crafters.

The CNG Camry is powered by a 2.4l four-cylinder engine with Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, fueled by CNG. The engine, together with the electric motor, develops 170 hp and has a fuel consumption rating of 33 mpg in combined cycle.

The CNG system used on the Camry, built by Metal Crafters, is made up of two Lincoln composite Type 4 tanks, with a maximum of 3,600 psi. The range the tanks give to the Camry is estimated at around 250 miles.

To make it as visible as possible, Toyota turned to Street Image for the creation of the exterior of the vehicle. The Camry now boasts an aggressive body kit with custom front grill and unique rear bumper, lowered overall ride height on adjustable coilover suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels rolling on Toyo Proxy 4 tires and a multi-colored vehicle wrap with CNG and Surfrider logos.

The goal of the car is to showcase the benefit for the environment of CNG powered vehicles. According to Toyota, using CNG would mean reducing dependency of foreign fuels. Data shows that about 99 percent of natural gas used in the US comes from domestic sources.
