New Zealand’s vehicle sales hit the highest total for an August since 1984 last month, with 2,602 new commercial vehicles registered.
The Motor Industry Association (MIA) also reported passenger vehicles being at the highest level since 1987, with 6,828 registration, meaning a 14.5 percent increase from last year.

"With the year to date new vehicles registrations running 10.7 per cent ahead of this time in 2012, the new car sector continues to perform at levels last seen in the 1980's," said MIA chief executive David Crawford.

Toyota maintains its dominance in the market, with a 17.8 percent share of the sales in August, having the Corolla as its top-selling model. The next most popular automakers were Holden and Ford.
