In the wake of the announcement of the tie-up between Caterham and Renault, Tony Fernandes will step down as the British firm’s F1 team boss, before the end of the season, in order to concentrate on the development of road cars - a much more important and future-orriented endeavor.
He never meant for his F1 position to become permanent, and now he has good reason to give it up, as the Alpine sports car project, of which he is a part of, is of the utmost importance for the future direction of the company. The name of his successor has yet to be announced, though.
"On the racing side we have come to the conclusion that it is better if someone else takes over the team principal role to move forward [. . .] We are definitely better at business than finding tenths of seconds around a lap [. . .] It was right for us to lead the team initially and set a template of how it should be. That vision is now set and the team is ready to move forward to the midfield," Fernandes said.
