German manufacturer Mercedes Benz announced today it has reached an agreement for the delivery of Mercedes-Benz vehicles to be used by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (Technisches Hilfswerk, THW) in its fire prevention and disaster relief operations.
One of the models to be delivered to THW is a closed crew truck based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 316 CDI panel van. Dubbed MLW V, the vehicle is powered by a high-torque common-rail diesel engine (Euro 5) with 63 hp and can be converted to any technical units required by the THW.
The five seater vehicle is equipped with a load compartment which is accessible through the rear doors. Inside, a Sortimo shelving system is used for storing and securing loads and equipment.
Aside for the MLW V, THW also ordered a GKW 1 equipment vehicle, a vehicle based on the Mercedes-Benz Axor 1829 A. Powered by a 286 hp engine, the vehicle comes with all-wheel drive, single tires and Allison automatic transmission.
The vehicle is equipped with a Rosenbauer Feuerwehrtechnik body and an HPC cable winch. It is to be used for rescue operations, lifting and moving rubble and building components, and erecting support and auxiliary structures.
Considered to be at the core of the modernization of the fleet of vehicles used by the THW, the GKW 1 is already parked in the agencies garages, 11 units having been delivered this March. Mercedes Benz is to ship an additional 43 GKW 1s this summer, with the possibility of the total fleet being supplemented with an extra 139 vehicles.
