The box truck is one of the most underrated vehicles suitable for camper conversions. But don't take my word for it; see for yourself - today, I'm checking out a fantastic tiny home on wheels based on a box truck.
Vans are by far the most popular platform for camper conversions, and for good reasons. However, depending on your exact wants and needs, a box truck might be a better choice.

Let me tell you about some of the pros and cons. Unlike camper vans, box trucks have straight walls, which make the conversion easier to carry out. Moreover, some models have proper insulation.

Another benefit is that box trucks offer a ton of space both inside, allowing you to create a well-equipped living space, as well as underneath, where you have room to fit various tanks, such as water, propane, or additional fuel tanks. Lastly, box trucks can be a stealthy mobile living solution, have excellent payload capacities, and are easy to find and quite cheap to buy.

On the other hand, box trucks are made to run on well-paved roads, so bad roads or steep slopes will be more difficult to tackle. Furthermore, some models have flimsy walls that are not suitable for a tiny home conversion. Height and weight distribution can also be issues.

Now, let's continue with the rig's tour. Meet Eva and Braydyn and their unique camper based on a 2006 Ford E-450 box truck. They've been living inside it for the past two years.

These two adventurers aren't strangers to mobile living. They've lived two and a half years in Braydyn's former truck, a 1986 F-150. Braydyn converted it himself, building a simple but effective camper shell. So, after so much time spent in a very compact rig, the two knew exactly what they wanted to have in their next tiny home on wheels.

As usual, I'll start with the exterior features. You'll be able to tell this isn't any run-of-the-mill box truck as soon as you lay eyes on it.

On the driver's side, the couple devised a sizeable garage space holding two toolboxes and a 40-gallon (151-liter) freshwater tank connected to a filter, a pump, and a propane-powered heater. What's more, the couple matched the freshwater tank's capacity by fitting a 40-gallon greywater tank.

Also in the garage, you'll discover a generator, cargo boxes, skateboards, other tools, and more. But how did the duo manage to fit so much stuff here? Well, this garage is a pass-through space, meaning it runs from one side of the vehicle to the other.

On the opposite side, you'll discover an additional compartment. It houses this rig's power system. Its highlights are 600 Ah batteries, a 60-amp DC-DC charger, a 3,000 W inverter, and a 40-amp charge controller connected to solar panels on the roof.

Other notable exterior features are a rack and traction boards mounted above the driver's cabin, as well as a ladder right by the camper's entrance at the rear. Moreover, the entire rear part can be covered using a large bug screen.

That's it for the exterior, so let's head inside. Enter and you'll be greeted by a cozy, beautifully designed living space with an open layout. I love its aesthetic - the couple chose dark, timeless cabinetry paired with a shiplap ceiling. Furthermore, the ceiling's darker color is matched for the countertops and the flooring.

After you step inside, the kitchen is on your left. It features a butcher block countertop, a two-burner gas stove, two spacious overhead cabinets, a deep sink, a small fridge/freezer, and a backup slide-out fridge box.

On the opposite side, you'll notice an enormous, floor-to-ceiling closet with hanging space and a drawer. Next to it, Eva and Braydyn created a surfboard rack.

Next, we have the bathroom, located on the driver's side of the interior. It's quite simple, boasting a standard 32x32-inch (81x81-centimeter) shower pan, a rainfall shower head, a shampoo and soap holder, a towel rail, and a window.

"Where do you work or eat?" you might be thinking. Well, the couple devised a small desk for these two exact purposes. Even though it might be a bit of a tighter fit, two people can use it at the same time. Moreover, you can enjoy some nice views while sitting here, as there's a window right in front of you.

The bedroom takes up the front part of the interior. It has a full-size mattress with 7-inch memory foam, arranged to sleep you from east to west. What's more, a small door underneath the bed leads directly into the garage I talked about earlier.

At the bed's foot, you'll discover a desk holding a TV, some books, and a fan. However, the couple uses a 14,000-BTU Dometic A/C unit for proper cooling.

The only downside I see with this rig is the toilet – the couple stores a cassette toilet in the garage. As Braydyn explained, it's not the kind of cassette toilet you can use multiple times before dumping its contents, but rather a single-use one – think of it like a 5-gallon bucket. A much better solution that many adventurers go for is a composting toilet.

All in all, Eva and Braydyn have created a one-of-a-kind camper with a carefully crafted living space. It's snug, well-equipped, and offers a ton of storage space. The cherry on top is that this rig didn't even cost much to build: around $35,000 (€32,127).

The couple enjoyed making this tiny home on wheels so much that they decided to open up their own professional conversion company, which they named BRD Builds.
