Many people choose mobile living due to the freedom it offers – and one of the ways adventurers enjoy this freedom and connect to nature is by going off the beaten path. Today, I'm checking out an off-road-ready truck camper that, despite its compact size, serves as a cozy full-time home for a couple.
Meet Brittany and Jay, who have been enjoying mobile living for the past seven years. Seven years is quite a lot – some people try mobile living for a while and then return to conventional living, but it's clear that this lifestyle suits this couple.

Britanny and Jay's goal was to build the ultimate overlanding machine – think of it as an EarthRoamer, except without the exorbitant price tag and the high-end features. Their vehicle of choice was a 2018 Ram Power Wagon. On top of it, they added a 2018 Capri Truck Camper.

Before we go into detail regarding the rig, let me tell you more about how much it all cost. The base vehicle cost $50,000 (€46,409), while the truck camper was bought off Facebook Marketplace for $12,000 (€11,138). Moreover, they invested around $11,000 (€10,214) for the add-ons, bringing the total price of this mobile home to about $73,000 (€67,783). It's a pretty good deal for a full-time home, considering that's how much some professional van conversions cost, without including the price of a base vehicle.

While the Ram Power Wagon is factory-ready with a 4x4 drivetrain for going off the beaten path, the couple wanted to add some extra features. They installed a new suspension system with airbags, springs, and a swaybar. What's more, the vehicle rides on Method rims wrapped in Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires.

There are also various accessories attached outside. Since Jay is a chef, he wanted to bring his cooking appliances on board. You'll discover his outdoor kitchen housed in a long box on the passenger side. It comprises various bushcraft tools, such as a hatchet, a cleaver, knives, spices, and more.

The box can be opened by flipping down one of its panels, which then serves as a small countertop. Above it, you'll see various gear, such as traction boards and a shovel – these are a must when going off-road, especially when your off-roading rig is also your home.

This rig's "piece-de-resistance" when it comes to cooking is located at the rear: an Oklahoma Joe's smoker. Underneath it, you'll find a Honda generator powered by a 12-gallon (45-liter) gas tank – Jay said it's enough to make it run for more than a week.

On the driver's side, you'll notice a compartment holding a sizeable propane canister, which powers the fridge and heater inside the rig. Another excellent feature nearby is a UV water filtration system, enabling the couple to take water from any source, as they can make it drinkable. After the UV system kills the bacteria, the water is routed through a sediment filter, and it ends up in a 30-gallon (114-liter) freshwater tank inside the camper.

For power, Brittany and Jay use an EcoFlow Delta portable power station paired with 400 W EcoFlow solar panels on the roof. Also on the roof is where you'll find a StarLink antenna and an A/C.

Truck campers are a fantastic choice for those who want to go into the wilderness but only require a little space. In this case, the camper pod offers around 65 square feet (6 square meters) of room – that's about the size of the average bathroom of a conventional home.

To enter, you'll have to use a door at the rear. Step inside, and you'll be surrounded by a fully wooden interior, making you feel like you're in a cabin. Regarding design, Brittany and Jay opted for a copper aesthetic, reflected in the kitchen's antique decor, as well as in the rest of the interior.

You'll discover the kitchen on the left side of the interior. It features a tiny stainless steel sink, a slide-screen window, and a copper bar holding various kitchen items. For storage, the duo uses two decently sized overhead cabinets and a cabinet underneath the countertop. Brittany explained that their storage spots are enough to hold about ten days' worth of food.

Other notable elements are a heater, a small fridge, a spice cubby, and a radio. By the way, since they don't have a stove inside, the countertop offers more space for preparing meals. Right by the door, a floor-to-ceiling space is used to store stuff.

Opposite the kitchen, you'll discover the bathroom – yes, despite the compact size, this camper comes with a bathroom. It features a composting toilet and a shower, but the couple also uses the space to hang various stuff. In a camper this small, every single inch is valuable. Moreover, Brittany and Jay prefer showering outside in a fold-out shower cabin when the weather allows.

Next, we have the dinette area. It boasts a large swivel table, an enormous window, and a long bench. It's the perfect spot for eating and working, and there's also a TV mounted on a wall in front of the dinette. Moreover, the space under the bench is used to house the 30-gallon freshwater tank.

The final part of the living space is the bedroom, located above the driver's cabin. It comes with a full-size bed and two windows, one on each side. The space is a bit cramped for the two of them, both in width and height – the roof in this part of the camper is angled, and it's too low to allow the couple to sit up in bed.

A Froli sleep system creates some space between the frame and the mattress, allowing air to circulate and preventing mold from forming. Other notable details in the bedroom are a tiny shelf and various decorations matching the interior theme.

All in all, there are so many features packed into this tiny home. It's got serious off-road capabilities, pretty good off-grid capabilities, and a warm and inviting interior.
