Before the Tacoma rolled out, the Hilux was available in the United States as the Toyota Pickup. The 1982 model we found on Bring a Trailer is one of the nicest examples of these spartan trucks, and it’s a sweet rig thanks to the Brahma fiberglass bed cap and 33-inch Atlas Priva M/T rubber.
Currently located in California, chassis number JT4RN38D2C0024905 shows a little under 241,000 miles (387,852 kilometers) on the 22R inline-four engine. The 2.4-liter motor is pretty much bulletproof, and as opposed to later iterations, this fellow is rocking a Weber 32/36 smog-compliant carb.
The seller performed a tune-up in 2019, but not everything is perfect given this pickup’s age. Leaks from the transfer case need to be addressed, the steering knuckles have to be serviced, corrosion is obvious here and there, and the auxiliary fuel tank isn’t connected to the main tank or powerplant.
Lockable front hubs, black-finished 15-inch steel wheels, a full-size spare on the underside of the bed, front discs and rear drums, and a suspension lift also need to be mentioned, along with the split-style bench seat trimmed in gray cloth, black dashboard, and vinyl floor coverings. Equipped with air conditioning and a good ol’ push-button radio, this ‘Yota is offered with an accident-free Carfax report and a similarly clean title in the seller’s name.
The hood was resprayed during previous ownership, but the seller couldn’t care less about the visual imperfections of such a lovable workhorse. Truth be told, a nut-and-bolt restoration would spoil the weekend-warrior aesthetics.
“It’s a perfect example of a truck that has been used, but not abused, and you know exactly what you’re getting,” he said on BaT. “Someone took pride in owning this, and it shows in how well it’s been preserved. It’s not perfect, but has character and patina, which we all know you cannot fake.”
With six days of bidding left, this 1982 Toyota Pickup currently sits at $10k.
