The Bel Air was the model that brought home the bacon for Chevrolet during the '50s, but the debut of the Impala in 1958 clipped its wings, as the GM brand was focused almost entirely on making the new kid a big hit.
The Impala eventually became the model everybody wanted, so it was promoted to a stand-alone series in 1959 and became the best-selling car in the States a few years later.

The Bel Air continued to share many parts, engines, and styling with the Impala and the other full-size Chevys in the lineup, but people who wanted the best of the best could only go for the Impala.

A 1958 Bel Air that recently landed on eBay tries to prove that the Impala wasn't the only superstar in Chevy's lineup, flexing a condition that you can rarely see today. The car is spotless, and this is the first question you must ask: when was this Bel Air restored, and what repairs did the job include?

Buy Rite Autos, the garage in charge of finding a new home for this Bel Air, doesn't even mention a previous restoration, but I'm certain the car has already been overhauled. Everything is flawless, including the floors, and a Bel Air in this condition without a previous restoration is extremely rare. It'd be a rare gem selling at a higher price, and I doubt it'd remain available for long.

The garage also doesn't reveal how much of this Bel Air is still original. I love its looks, and the interior looks at least as exquisite as everything else, but buyers interested in all-original Chevys must thoroughly investigate this bit. If the car has already been restored, its original magic might have already been lost, and this is why an in-person or third-party inspection is required.

The engine under the hood is the base V8 available in 1958 – the 283 V8 that was, until this year, the only V8 choice. 1958 also witnessed the debut of the almighty 348, and the new block would have made the Bel Air significantly more desirable. You'll have to stick with a 283, but it's likely in tip-top shape, with everything in working condition. This Bel Air will probably take you anywhere, but I doubt the car will spend much time on the road. Its condition requires a heated garage, away from anything damaging the paint.

The garage is ready to let the car go for $37,900, which seems a fair price, considering this Bel Air's condition. However, you must ask more questions if you're committed to a purchase and book a ticket for Fort Lauderdale, Florida to see this classic in person.
