The Model Y Air Mattress Might Be Tesla's Hottest Accessory Right Now

Tesla has listed an air mattress for the Model Y in its online shop for $225. This proved one of the most popular accessories, as owners flocked to buy one. Moments after it was listed, the mattress was already sold out. Tesla added new inventory, but that also sold out just as quickly.
Thanks to its natural qualities, the Tesla Model Y is ideal for overnight camping. It is large enough to accommodate two adults and their camping paraphernalia and offers a controlled climate during the night. Indeed, thanks to Tesla's Camp mode, you can set the desired temperature and sleep in the utmost comfort.

This is why many people bought aftermarket mattresses to turn their Teslas into camping rigs. The best out there can be folded and stowed away in the lower trunk compartment. When you need it at night, you fold out the rear seats, lay down the mattress, and inflate it to provide adequate cushioning. Tesla must have seen the opportunity because it finally added an air mattress to its online shop.

The Tesla mattress follows the same recipe as some of the more expensive aftermarket solutions, being designed to fit snuggly across the folded rear seats and trunk of the Model Y. According to the product listing on the Tesla Shop, the mattress offers 3 inches of "high-density foam filling" and has a waterproof polyester exterior. At 74.4" x 50.4" x 3.12" (1910 x 1300 x 80 mm), it's almost a full-size mattress. The included air pump helps to inflate it quickly when needed. The mattress can be deflated and stowed in the vehicle's rear well when not in use.

However, the most intriguing feature is not its comfort or convenience but how popular it became. Minutes after it was listed, the mattress was already out of stock, so those wishing to buy one must sign up on a list. Although Tesla re-stocked the air mattress almost immediately, the new stock sold out just as quickly. It's unclear when it will be back in stock or how many were made available to order in the first place.

One of the reasons Tesla's air mattress proved such a sales success could be its price. At $225 ($310 in Canada), it's one of the more price-conscious variants on the market. Tesla is known for pricing its accessories at a reasonable level, although this doesn't always mean affordable. In this case, I'm sure even those with no immediate intention to go camping in their Model Y would want to buy one, just in case.

The way the Tesla air mattress flew off the shelves reminded me of another very popular item in Tesla Shop: the round steering wheel for the Model S and Model X. When Tesla launched the refreshed S/X in 2021, one of the cabin's highlights was the yoke. Everyone praised it and swore that the Model S would not be whole without one. Yet, when Tesla offered the round steering wheel option, everybody bought one, causing the stocks to deplete faster than you could say "yoke." Later, even the most ardent yoke fans admitted the round steering wheel is better.
