Tesla Motors has announced a software fix for the Model S all-electric four-door sedan that helps the vehicle’s charging system cope with unexpected power fluctuations caused by faulty wiring or other conditions.
The update was released a month after a Model S caught fire in a garage in California. Initially, it was believed that it was caused by the car, but the investigation revealed the fire started because of the overheated wall charging system.
Called “automatic charge current reduction”, the new function will automatically reduce the charging current by 25 perfect in the event of unexpected power fluctuations to “help protect you even when a problem exists that is outside of the car or charging electronics”.
“It should significantly increase robustness and safety in the unlikely situation that a home wiring system, receptacle, adapter or cord is unable to meet its rated current capacity,” the manufacturer added.
