Tata Motors is analyzing the possibility to bring the second batch of Nanos to the customers at an earlier date than initially scheduled.
According to media reports, the automaker will probably start to accept bookings for the car in the following three to six months.
When the Nano was launched, Tata Group warned that the car’s $2160 (approximate value) retail price will only apply to the first batch of customers, with future clients having to pay more for the vehicle.
Tata’s rescheduling decision was mainly influenced by the fact that 20-25 percent of the Nano’s original booking have been canceled, due to delivery delays. The waiting time for a Nano delivery has grown substantially, driving some of the customers into the competition’s more expensive but also more available arms. The delays were caused by the Nano’s production issues in 2008, when Tata was forced to relocate the car’s production.
The delivery time for the car’s original set of customers has also been cut, from January-March 2011 to September-December 2010. Company officials said that the Nano’s manufacturing plant located in Gujarat will start production in the following moths. At the present time the car is being produced at the Pantnagar plant, where the daily production output has been increased form 150 units to 180 units.
The Nano is expected to receive one or more diesel units in 2010. These will probably use a three cylinder layout and might even make it into the European version of the car.
