Suzuki Recalling Grand Vitara and SX4

Suzuki’s US arm announced that it is recalling certain Grand Vitara and SX4 models due to a tension adjuster pulley that can cause a multitude of problems, many of which can seriously increase the risk of a crash.

The campaign affects certain model year 2009-2010 Grand Vitara with four-cylinder engines and model year 2011 Grand Vitaras produced prior to October 17, 2010, model year 2010 SX4s as well as model year 2011 SX4s produced prior to October 14, 2010.

The tension adjuster pulley for the drive belt that operates the alternator, air conditioner compressor, power steering pump and water pump comes with an improperly built internal spring that can break due to high levels of stress.

If the spring breaks, the drive belt will not be adjusted properly, and can slip, leading to a squeaking noise. However, this isn’t the worst that could happen: the drive belt could come off, requiring increased effort for the driver for the steering operation. In addition to that, this could also cause the coolant temperature to increase, which can lead to engine overheating, or can cause the charging light to come on, potentially leading to battery discharge and engine stall.

The tension adjuster pulley will be replaced with an enhanced part, with the service being performed free of charge. The recall will begin on or before February 16.

If you own one of the affected models, you can contact Suzuki at 1-887-697-8985 or online, as well as the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or via the Safecar website.
