The C8 Chevrolet Corvette is the flagship supercar killer of the automotive industry, for sure. And it will only get better with the promised ZR1 version and the potential Zora hypercar variant.
However, the model series rightfully dubbed as 'America's sports car' has a very rich history that spans another seven generations with the classic front-engine rear-wheel drive layout instead of the current mid-engine and RWD or eAWD one. Also, using the Corvette as a blank canvas to make it your own is very easy – and just about everywhere, including at the local quarter-mile dragstrip.
But there is no need to take our word for granted as we have an eloquent example. So, the good folks over at the racing-focused ImportRace channel on YouTube are back at their usual venue - Island Dragway in Great Meadows, New Jersey, after previously jumping around to 65-mph roll racing at Pocono Raceway or high-profile events like Street Car Takeover in Bradenton or TX2K at the Texas Motorplex.
This time around, after previously showing us that Island Dragway attracts just about everything – including stuff like twin-turbo Boss 302s, M5s, C8 Z06s, Tesla Model S Plaids, and just about everything in between – they're focusing on something older, a C6 Chevrolet Corvette. This ride is allegedly supercharged, and it's up against even older competition, as it turns out.
The first brawl features the black Corvette racing an equally dark and menacing Chevy Camaro – most likely a second-generation model – with fat rear tires and cookie cutters at the front. Alas, it was all in vain because the C6 took off great (0.1 versus 0.6 reaction times) and nailed a strong 9.75s performance against the opponent's 11.15s pass.
Secondly, the Corvette went up against a beautiful, pale-teal second-generation Dodge Dart packing vintage-style white-wall Hoosiers, and it still didn't show any mercy when facing off with the elderly. Well, at least, not in the beginning – toward the end of the pass, the driver hit the brakes early and registered a 10.71s victory against its opponent's 11.59s effort.
Last but certainly not least, a similarly-themed burgundy-shaded C6 Chevrolet Corvette came along with its ZR1 credentials. This was clearly a race for the ages if it happened during the middle of the 2000s – but in this instance, it represented just another day at the quarter-mile dragstrip, with one major exception. The supercharged Corvette driver nailed a perfect 0.00 reaction time (!) against its opponent's 1.69 and crossed the finish line well in advance with a flawless 9.65s versus 11.19s victory.
Or was just an electronic glitch and the Corvette only won because it was better prepared by the aftermarket realm and the driver had more experience than the owner of the contemporary Chevy Corvette ZR1?
