Joining special editions of the BRZ and WRX STI, the Viziv Performance Concept is the biggest attraction of the Subaru stand at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. Bearing the name of a series that started at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the design study is “a sports sedan concept model that embodies the brand’s vision for the future of making cars.” What sort of car, you might ask?
The type that delivers “enjoyment and peace of mind to its customers,” apparently. A rear-slung sedan with four doors, short deck, intricate fenders with protruding lips, and two cameras instead of mirrors, the Viziv Performance Concept previews the next take on the Dynamic x Solid design language. Hearsay suggests some styling cues might be grafted onto the next-gen Legacy, which is expected to make its world premiere around 2019.
Just like the Impreza, the all-new Legacy will rely on the high-strength steel construction of the Subaru Global Platform. A revised suspension system and hybridization are in the cards, as is advanced driver-assist technology. But first, the Tribeca-replacing Ascent seven-seat SUV will arrive in 2018.
The Viziv Performance Concept, as per Subaru, is highly technologized. With EyeSight as its building block, the sedan is also equipped with some kind of self-driving technology. With Subaru aiming to introduced Level 2 autonomy by 2020, it’s easy to presume what the Viziv is theoretically capable of.
With Subaru’s push for hybridization, it’s highly likely the Viziv Performance Concept hides something interesting under the skin. Unfortunately, the Japanese automaker didn’t detail what makes the futuristic one-off tick. The scoop in the hood might be an indicator that internal combustion is here to stay. And being a Subaru, the engine would be of the force-fed boxer variety.
There’s also the possibility that Subaru will graft a few bits and bobs from this concept to the next-generation WRX and WRX STI, which are supposed to arrive in 2020 at the earliest. Of course, the newcomers will retain the six-speed manual transmission to the detriment of the Lineartronic CVT.
