Great news, fans of the BRZ, GT 86 and Scion FR-S! Toyota and Subaru have agreed to make another one, although they haven’t talked about when that will happen yet.
Considering Toyota is still fine-tuning the mid-life facelift for its sports coupe, it could take another three years before we see what the new 2-door looks like. However, at least we know it will happen, a fact that was up in the air for a while.

It seems like Toyota is working with anybody and everybody these days. It’s selling Mazda’s four-door subcompact sedan as a Scion in America while simultaneously building a successor to the Supra with BMW.

Subaru boss Yasuyuki Yoshinaga has confirmed that a new Toyobaru is coming in an interview with AutoNews:We have already agreed with Toyota we will do a full model change. We have not decided when it will be introduced.”

Building a vehicle of this type takes a lot of time. However, both Japanese automakers are willing to put in the hours because of the huge marketing boost this gives them.

We can still remember how long and tedious the development and launch of the previous triplets was. They showed three amazing concepts, tested in every possible scenario, and took interview after interview. Subaru went to huge lengths to place its 2.0-liter boxer engine as low as possible and even tested on snow to see if the car was stable enough. After the reveal, many people criticized the cars for being underpowered and expensive. However, demand was so high that U.S. dealers added premiums as big as $4,000.

Things look a little different in 2015, as Mazda just dropped a new Miata roadster. This car is a little faster in the real world, and most people say it’s more fun, despite only having 155 horsepower to play with.

In Japan, the MX-5 Miata is only sold with a 1.5-liter engine producing 131 horsepower. Toyota is even working on a rival for that car, although not with Subaru’s help. When ready, this will take the form of a 2+2 coupe that’s as short as a Yaris and also uses a 1.5-liter engine with 131 horsepower.
