Swedish carmaker Volvo is trying hard to rekindle the fire it once had on the global automotive scene with many new models on the way in the next few years, none more important than this one. You see, while they still make some of the safest cars on the planet, that's not really enough any more.
Their new goal is offering very efficient cars and lower their overall CO2 emission average to just 95 g/km by 2020. That's a tall order for a company selling so many SUV, and they seem to be starting at the top with the next generation XC90.
The very first spy photos of the XC90-to-be were taken earlier today by our spies in Sweden. Under that tired old exterior of an XC70 is a band new SPA (Scaleable Platform Architecture) platform, which is light and very strong. Because of it, the all-new SUV will be offered exclusively with turbocharged four-cylinder engines. We'll remind you the current model has a 4.4-liter V8 under its bonnet.
We really don't know if the XC90 will be ready for 2014 as the rumors suggest, but it has been given top priority and will usher in stock hybrid drive and many more innovations.
