General Motors is keeping Opel on a very tight budget, which means instead of getting a brand new model, they are going to have another facelift for the Corsa D, even though the architecture dates back to 2006.
While we're a bit disappointed that the Eisenach hatch isn't going all-new, there's still reason to get excited here. This test vehicle is not your average 70 hp hairdresser's car, it's the new Corsa OPC model.
Easily distinguished from its wider whee archer, wheels, flared bumpers and deck wing, the smallest OPC model will also receive a new front end. But that's not all.
We think the Corsa OPC will adopt the latest 1.6-liter SIDI Turbo engine which has just been dropped into the Cascada. This makes 200 PS and more importantly 300 Nm of torque. Most cars in this class have 200 PS, but none of them have this much torque: MINI Cooper S has 250 Nm, Peugeot 208 GTi has 275, Fiesta ST has 244 Nm and the Clio RS has 240 Nm. Opel should also have a new gearbox lined up for this car.
Our spy photographers have captured the Corsa OPC while it was undergoing testing at the Nurburgring. Ironically, the new tailpipe setup for the car is the same as the outgoing Nurburgring Edition of the hot hatch. Dropping the central-mounted pipe for two simpler pipes, the Corsa almost looks like it's been tuned.
