The Mercedes-AMG GT R is on its way to losing the range-topper title, with the three-pointed star now testing an even spicier incarnation of its supercar.
We're talking about the street-legal incarnation of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 customer racecar, which has just made its spy material debut. The missile was obviously spotted at the Nurburgring and while the prototype tried to pass as a "regular" GT R, there are at least two clues that give it away.
For one thing, the rear window of the AMG Green Hell Magno-dressed prototype is made from polymer, as you'll be able to notice in the video at the bottom of the page.
This falls perfectly in line with the philosophy behind the car, which should see it being lighter and even more focused than the GT R.
Then there's the exhaust layout of the tester. Unlike the GT R, which uses a central setup, the prototype we have here comes with side exhaust tips, as is the case with the GT4 racecar. Speaking of which, Mercedes-AMG is currently working to deliver the GT4 to its customers by the end of the year.
On the firepower front, the racecar might be limited to 510 hp by motorsport regulations, but the street version is expected to one-up the GT R's 585 hp.
This unofficial war stated in the form of a brawl between the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT. And while the quickest Neunelfer you can currently drive is the 7:12.7 991.2 GT3, a 500 hp naturally aspirated machine, the Mercedes-AMG GT R has managed to deliver a 7:10 lap in an unofficial test coming from Sport Auto.
If we are to talk about the entire VW Group, the 6:52 production car lap record set by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante shows a clear winner.
However, with the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which packs 700 twin-turbo horses, rumored to be engaged in the battle for the said record, the GT4-derived street car will be Affalterbach's weapon against Zuffenhausen.
