So far, Genesis has made two cars, the G90 flagship and the G80, which is like the normal Genesis from before. Now, they are working on the G70, which everybody says is a rival for the BMW 3 Series.
Oh, the 3 Series. It's one of my favorite German cars of all time, and there hasn't been a generation I didn't like. It's also the benchmark for what everybody else in the industry does, from Jaguar to Cadillac and the Asian car brands.
Now, I know that nobody is ever going to give the Genesis G70 a chance. However, just looking at the design underneath that camouflage, it seems that the Hyundai sub-brand is doing a good job. This is the sportiest Genesis offered until the new Coupe arrives, if it ever does that.
To survive, the G70 will have to attract a lot of conservative older buyers who know how to pinch the pennies. That's why the styling isn't as radical as the Genesis Hybrid Sports Sedan Concept from the New York International Auto Show. We notice that the indicator lights are much lower in the bumper, and the wing mirrors have a polished silver color that's not the same as the rest of the body.
Looking at the profile of the car, we notice that it's rear-wheel drive. Considering every luxury car also offers AWD as an option, we expect the system from the Genesis to be adopted.
Under the hood, we are likely to find both inline-4 and V6 engines. The basic one should be a 2-liter turbo with around 240-270 HP. Considering the exhaust setup, that could be what we see here. American prototypes testing in the Nevada desert have been seen with a hood bulge and two oval exhaust pipes, one for each side. That could indicate that the new twin-turbo 3.3-liter will be available.
Genesis is a new-born chick, a bit like Lexus was 27 years ago. Sure, it's got the backing of a major carmaker. However, it will take a while to get noticed. The demands of the market are also changing, which is why plug-in hybrid versions of the G70 and other models are being considered. Not only was the preview concept a hybrid, but Hyundai already has several such green cars.
