With the second generation of Ford’s “smart” utility vehicle, the Blue Oval managed to build a global car that’s following the One Ford mission and vision to the core. However, nobody knows what the hell engineers and designers were thinking when they decided to go with that rear-mounted spare wheel.
It’s hardly believable that a vehicle such as the EcoSport mini SUV can eat hundreds of millions in research & development, yet nobody had the balls to go to the chief designer and tell him “that spare wheel is downright horrific, yo!” Two long years passed since the EcoSport became a global product, but Ford only now listened to the public and decided to delete that fugly rear-mounted wheel for 2015.
As you can see in the mini gallery below, our carparazzi team managed to snap only two pics of EcoSport facelift in pre-production form after refueling in a service station. The psychedelic zebra-like camo masking the boot door is thin enough to properly tell there’s no way of attaching a spare wheel to it.
That means we shouldn’t hold our breath for anything more than a suite of 1-liter to 2-liter three and four-cylinder motors, including the three-cylinder 999 cc EcoBoost. As for transmission options, a five-speed stick shift and a six-speed dual clutch PowerShift automatic transmission should do the trick.

The Fiesta-based EcoSport facelift is pretty much the same as ever, minus the hatch-mounted spare wheel
Rims, rear parking sensors, taillights, the shape of the mirrors, you name it, things haven’t changed as much as one would normally expect from a facelifted model. For next year, the EcoSport will certainly receive some minor cabin updates too, most notably updated infotainment and slightly better materials, but other than that expect a case of déjà vu.That means we shouldn’t hold our breath for anything more than a suite of 1-liter to 2-liter three and four-cylinder motors, including the three-cylinder 999 cc EcoBoost.
