It used to be that only the boldest automakers offed electric cars, but now everybody is jumping on the band wagon. The California Electric Car Mandate has a lot to do with the launch of the Focus Electric or Fiat 500e, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Kia also has an electric car on its to-do list, and the Koreans decided the best thing to do was to base it on the new Soul, since it's already a nonconformist's car.
With a launch date expected in the first half of 2014, the Kia Soul EV has been spotted testing in America. While the engineers were driving it, the car ran out of juice, which allowed us to snap the first photos of the charging plug that they mounted on the nose of the car for easy access.
The new Kia Soul EV will be equipped with a more powerful version of the Korean market Ray EV’s 50 kW. The juice will come from a .4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack located in the boot. Speculation suggest the car will reach 60 mph (98 km/h) in just 12 seconds and provide a maximum range of 124 miles (200 km/h).
