The all-new M5 is an interesting vehicle. It's slower and heavier than its predecessor, but its electrification makes it more usable on a daily basis. Despite a couple of drawbacks, the high-performance unit remains a step forward from many points of view. Many people will enjoy it, which is why we tried to spec one.
Unfortunately, BMW US didn't rush to bring the configurator online just in time for people to try out various builds. But on the right side of the pond, the British and the Germans obtained access soon after the unit's official debut. So, until the platform is ready, let's see what you should put on your next M5.

First, let's remember what this sedan is all about. With a curb weight similar to the X7's, the new M5 is a 717-hp monster (as long as the high-voltage 18.6-kWh usable battery is charged to an appropriate level) that will surely chew through tires like a high torque wildling. Still, the Bavarians tamed the M5 by electrifying it. The model has an all-electric range of 25 miles (40 kilometers), which means you'll be able to leave your home without waking the kids or the neighbors.

Second, in the UK, the M unit has a starting price of £111,405 ($140,828 / €131,547). That's quite a bit more than the US MSRP of $120,675.

In Germany, the new plug-in hybrid M5 costs a very nice and easy-to-remember €144,000 ($154,133 / £121,927) without any options.

Pretty straightforward

Since the M5 is the undisputed king of the 5 Series lineup and a pricey iconic vehicle for BMW, there aren't too many options. Be it the UK or Germany, you're faced with two optional colors (Storm Bay and Frozen Deep Grey), two different rims (951 M and 952 M), three Merino upholstery versions, and two interior trim designs before diving into important optional equipment.

But you don't have to look very far. The Ultimate Pack bundles the Alcantara headlining, heated front and rear seats, carbon ceramic brakes with gold calipers, carbon fiber roof, carbon fiber side mirrors, the M Driver's Pack (which unlocks the top speed), window sunshades, the Travel and Comfort system (which adds more USB-C ports and tablet holders), the Driving Assistant Professional (which includes adaptive cruise control with automatic lane change and ventilated front seats. It costs £19,500 ($24,646) in the UK and €22,470 ($24,058) in Germany.

If you don't care about a lower center of gravity, BMW allows you to replace the carbon fiber roof with a fixed panoramic glass one at no cost.

Third, the only option left is a tow bar. If you want to put that hybridized V8 to good work, choose it. Be advised that you'll only be able to tow around 4,400 lb (1996 kg). Need a different charging cable? Well, that's an extra, too. But we don't envision many people choosing it. The one that comes with the car is good enough.

That's it. A fully loaded all-new BMW M5 (with the Ultimate Pack and the tow bar) will set you back £133,380 ($168,619) in the UK and €169,020 ($180,961) in Germany. If those figures surprise you, then you should remember that in Europe, car prices usually include the value-added tax (VAT), which is sort of a sales tax that nearly everyone pays.

One more thing

The only difference is that it's higher than what Americans have to give to the Comptroller. In the UK, it's 20 percent of the final price, while in Germany, it is 19 percent. So, a six-figure car will add at least £19,000 or €20,000 to the price. Some companies can offset the VAT cost, but most customers will pay it one way or another.

But if you feel adventurous and want to make your hybrid M5 even cooler, you can opt for an Individual color. There are many shades, tones, and tints available. It looks amazing in Twilight Purple Pearl, Petrol Mica, or Riviera Blue Uni. Fireorange III Uni is especially cool because it makes the high-performance sedan look like it came straight out of Forza or Need for Speed.

However, our favorite ones are Techno Violet, Liquid Copper, and Blue Bay Lagoon. These three colors just give it a fantastic appeal and complement what's hiding under the hood. Rear-wheel steering is only there to ensure that people will take cool pictures of your ride as you oversteer gallantly on the track.

Don't listen to what people who don't have money to buy a new M5 say online. The right paint job makes this iconic sedan look like a champ. It may not look great in photos or renderings, but it will be admired everywhere you go, as long as you don't intend to hide its silhouette with a black or dark grey exterior.

Fourth, contrary to what many netizens believe or claim to know, BMW is not in the business of experimenting with cars at its own expense. It is a for-profit company, and it has made its shareholders very happy in the last few years. The UAW has shone a light on just how well the Bavarians are doing. The XM may not be renewed for another generation because it was a brave attempt at creating a weird competitor for the DBX, Bentayga, and Urus, but the M5 will continue to live on.

Finally, if you're undecided and don't want to experience buyer's remorse, maybe you should "weight" for a lighter version of the M5. The automaker will surely give us a Competition or a CS variant that won't be as heavy as an X7.

Also, don't forget that the M5 F90 exists. It may not experience a steep depreciation this year, but it will become more affordable as the new generation convinces more people to sign up for an executive sedan that can comfortably run laps on the Nurburgring and then take them to important meetings in comfort or, depending on the battery's state of charge, even in silence.

Oh, and remember: the M5 Touring is on its way, too! Talk about an exquisite family hauler, right?
