Adventurers frequently choose vans with longer wheelbases for camper conversions due to the additional real estate they offer. However, even if you go for a model with a really short wheelbase, that doesn't mean you can't find clever solutions to make full use of the available space.
Don’t take my word for it – I got just the example to prove what I just said. Meet Douglas and his tiny home on wheels, a self-converted 2014 Ram ProMaster 2500 with a high roof and a 136” wheelbase. It’s currently for sale, but I’ll tell you more about that at the end of the article.

As usual, I’ll start this van’s tour with its exterior. On the outside, this van is pretty run-of-the-mill, meaning it could serve as an excellent stealthy mobile home. The only elements that give away its camper DNA are a rear-mounted ladder and the 400 W solar panels on the roof.

Slide the main door open, and a compact yet well-arranged living space will greet you. Moreover, Douglas insulated the entire van with Havelock wool.

This rig has an open layout, meaning the driver’s cabin isn’t separated from the rest of the interior by a dividing wall. Instead, Douglas installed a large curtain between the two areas for more privacy.

Other notable features at the front of the van are a sizeable headliner shelf holding flexible bins, a backup camera, and a Maxxair ceiling fan. Douglas also fitted smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for safety.

Regarding aesthetics, Douglas opted for a bright look, blending Lifeproog vinyl plank flooring with white shiplap walls, white cabinetry with wood tones, and a cedar shiplap ceiling integrating dimmable LED lights.

You'll discover the kitchen dead ahead of the entrance. It features an 85-liter Isotherm fridge/freezer, a deep stainless steel sink, and a portable single-burner induction stove.

For storage, you can use a huge overhead cabinet with two sliding doors and multiple drawers underneath the countertop. By the way, I’m a fan of sliding doors for overhead cabinets since there’s no need to install gas struts, and you can also make the cabinets larger since you don’t need to leave room for the doors to open upwards.

The kitchen also has two control panels, one integrated into a drawer and one hidden behind a small door under the sink. The former comes with gauges for the water tanks, light switches, switches that dump the greywater tanks, a battery monitoring system, and a heater controller.

The latter has two outlets, an inverter power switch, a USB port, a water heater times, and a switch that lets you choose to run either the stove or heater – they can’t operate simultaneously due to the high energy draw.

In the cabinet underneath the sink, you’ll find the entire plumbing system, which includes a water heater and a 12 V pump, as well as two decently sized drawers.

So, how can you fit a bathroom in such a small van? Well, you can get creative and use a versatile solution. Opposite the kitchen, a sizeable bench blocks part of the entrance.

Flip open its top panel, and you’ll see a composting toilet, a shower pan at the bottom, and a ball mixer. Then, all you have to do is hang a curtain from the ceiling, and you’re good to go. All the water you use in the shower ends up in a 15-gallon (57-liter) under-mounted and heater greywater tank, while the one used in the sink drains into a 10-gallon (38-liter) greywater tank.

Next, we have the dinette area, which is comprised of two benches, a swivel table, and a floor storage compartment holding a heater.

The bench on the driver’s side of the interior houses a 30-gallon (114-liter) freshwater tank, while the other integrates the power system. Its highlights are an 800 Ah battery bank, a 3,000 W inverter/charger, and a charge controller connected to the 400 W solar panels on the roof.

A fixed bed would take up a lot of room inside this compact van, so Douglas came up with another solution. He installed an extendable bed platform - in the day setup, you have a couch you can use.

When you’re ready to go to bed, you can pull out the wooden frame over the two benches and rearrange the cushions to create a queen-size bed. Two small bump-outs on the sides of the bedroom allow you to sleep from side to side, offering a width of 6 feet (183 centimeters). What’s more, a 12 V ceiling A/C will keep you nice and cool.

The final part of this camper van is the garage, located underneath the bed and accessible only from the outside by opening the two rear doors. On the left side, you’ll notice the rear part of the freshwater tank and its fill port. Electrical components take up the opposite side.

All in all, Douglas managed to fit many features, considering the small interior space he had to work with. His mobile home is snug, aesthetically pleasing, and really well thought out.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, this camper van is now for sale. According to its listing, the vehicle is titled and registered as a camper, and its odometer currently reads 36,000 miles (57,936 km), which is little considering the rig is ten years old. You’ll have to dish out $77,659 (€72,000) to get your hands on it. Furthermore, it's located in Newtown, Connecticut.
