Spanish automaker and Volkswagen subsidiary SEAT hasn’t given up on its plans to offer a crossover SUV. In fact, the company’s newly-appointed chairman, Jurgen Stackmann, said that an SUV is high on his list of priorities.
Speaking to Auto Express, Stackmann confirmed SEAT’s plans to introduce a crossover SUV in its lineup, adding that the new vehicle could go on sale as soon as 2014. "The upcoming trend is definitely that SUVs will play a role. Is an SUV an interesting model for SEAT? Yes, of course,” he said.
The new SUV is expected to be similar in size with the Volkswagen Tiguan and underpinned by the company’s MQB platform, also used for the new Leon range. Word has it SEAT could also offer a smaller, Volkswagen Taigun-based crossover, but that’s unlikely to happen until 2016, when the Taigun is scheduled for production.
While SUVs are a priority at SEAT, the company won’t offer a sportscar anytime soon, Stackmann added. “SEAT is not a manufacturer of sportscars, it’s not a niche manufacturer,” he explained.
