Our man with the cam went the extra mile to capture a few images of a VW ID.7 Wagon prototype, as the test driver wasn't going to sit around and do nothing.
To his defense, the car was basically naked, as save for a bit of white tape on the three-quarter windows, there was no camouflage at all to keep its design a secret until the grand unveiling. Fortunately, everything went well, and after dodging the camera a few times, our spy photographer managed to snap a few pictures of this all-electric German car.

Truth be told, its exterior design is not exactly a secret, as it looks basically the same up the front pillars as the VW ID.7 Sedan unveiled almost half a year ago. Further back, it has a longer roofline, larger rear quarter panels, a redesigned bumper, new taillights, and a tailgate opening up into a large cargo area. With their intricate pattern, even the wheels are identical to those of the four-door model.

We cannot take a look inside yet, but it is obvious that the station wagon will have an identical dashboard panel to the sedan (it's actually a liftback). This will include the same 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the minimalist instrument cluster, and likely the center console. The steering wheel, door cards (those up front, anyway), buttons, knobs, and everything else will carry over, and the same probably goes for the upholstery and trim.

Previewed by the ID. Space Vizzion Concept four years ago, the estate version of the Volkswagen ID.7 will get the same powertrains as its sedan counterpart. This currently comprises the 282 hp (286 ps/210 kW) and 406 Nm (550 Nm) of torque single-motor, with the dual-motor setups boasting all-wheel drive launching at a later date. Look for the same battery packs, too, the 77 and 86 kWh, enabling WLTP-rated ranges of 382 and 435 miles (615-700 km), respectively.

While the ID.7 is bound to hit our showrooms in 2024, we're not convinced that the station wagon will follow in its footsteps. However, it will go on sale on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean shortly after the grand unveiling, which is probably a few weeks to a few months away. Volkswagen hasn't disclosed yet when it will present the five-door ID.7, but chances are it will start accepting orders for it in Europe sometime next year, probably in the first half.

Think of it as an all-electric alternative to the new-generation Passat, which is only offered as a five-door. The model is available with internal combustion engines solely, including two plug-in hybrids, boasting up to 100 km (62 miles) of electric range. A pure BEV is not in the cards, as it would step on the toes of the ID.7.
