Schumacher Optimistic about Pirelli Tires

Michael Schumacher stated plenty of times last season – 2010, that is – that his struggles at F1 return were connected to two main factors: the oversteering nature of his new Mercedes W01 car and the new tires provided by Bridgestone.

Apparently, once Pirelli began its tire testing for the 2011 season last weekend, it seems that at least one of those problems is likely to disappear. Talking to the media after the Abu Dhabi test, the 41-year old racer admitted that he feels more comfortable driving on Pirelli compound, as it suits his driving style more.

These are not the final tires but the ones I used today seemed to suit my style a bit more, especially the fronts,” said Schumacher, after previously saying everybody needs to be cautious on the new tires provided by the Italian maker for the 2011 campaign.

Not only Schumacher, but also his former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa expressed his positive feelings towards the new tires. Like Schu, the Brazilian racer has struggled to understand the behavior of the old Bridgestone tires (for the past two seasons, actually), and told the media that he is happy with the feel of the new Pirelli units.

Overall, the majority of the drivers testing in Abu Dhabi over the weekend showed positive reactions to the front tires, praising the level of grip they provide.

According to what we have learned in Abu Dhabi, we will change the compounds, but not the construction. The drivers especially enjoyed the performance of our front tire, which is an area that we have worked on considerably,” said Pirelli's Paul Hembery.
