Drag racing comes in many shapes and sizes and we are here now to show you how they do it in the United Arab Emirates. As expected, the races take place on sand, but the action is not exactly... linear.
For starters, the simple action of sand being thrown in the air makes the races more spectacular than the ones at your local drag strip. Moreover, the slippery surface means that the driver has too keep a full focus, with some of the cars going sideways during the run.
We have a video that shows a “sanddrag” round which took place on March 5th. These seem to be 1/8 mile runs, so the action is as intense as it gets. It appears that there are two main classes, for vehicles with six or eight cylinders.
The latter also come with paddle tires. The result? runs that are not only faster, but could also qualify as sand fireworks. Some of the best runs in this class go into the high 2s.
There’s even a Nissan GT-R that was specifically tuned for this. Alas, the car is currently in the testing phase, so its run offers a rather... ahem... smoky result.
Fans of six-cylinder engine must not worry though, there are some rather extreme creations to be seen here. The tires may not offer the same grip, but you’ll still see massive turbines adorning the engine compartment, everything nicely assorted with wild exhaust sounds.
