Part of its never-before-seen array of futuristic technologies that will be implemented first on a production car, the W222 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will implement the Magic Sky Control panoramic roof as well.
With the touch of a button, passengers of the luxury sedan fitted with this technology can instantly change the tint level of the panoramic roof to either keep out the sunlight rays and heat or to enjoy the feeling of a convertible even if the roof is closed.
The original idea for the technology was first seen on the Mercedes-Benz Maybach Concept car, in 1997. The year when it finally entered series production was 2011, though, on the Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster R172, followed in the same year by the larger SL Roadster R231.
Using the same technology as the roadsters, the Magic Sky control on the S-Class will be available from the second half of 2014, offering a surface area three-times as larger as the glass roofs on the aforementioned cars.
After extensively testing pre-production vehicles using the technology from the cold of norther parts of Scandinavia to the desert heat of Death Valley, California, Mercedes-Benz says that Magic Sky Control can reduce sun-exposure to about 1/20th of a conventional glass roof, blocking over 99% of harmful UV radiations.
